My journey to becoming the host of The Oratory is a tapestry woven with the threads of my life experiences. It all began with my passion for communication, which emerged early on. Even as a schoolgirl, I couldn't help but get into trouble for my incessant talking. Little did I know that this was a sign of the gift that would define my future.
Television figures like Free from 106 and Park inspired me to aspire to connect with people through the media. I wanted to do what they did. My dream led me to work on my communication skills. I participated in short story competitions during my elementary school days, and in junior high, I summoned the courage to speak at my church. This love for storytelling propelled me to pursue an education in broadcast journalism at university.
As the years passed, I found myself hosting parties, organizing pub concerts, officiating weddings, and playing the role of host at various social gatherings. I offered my hosting talents to friends and even dabbled in radio, gaining valuable experience with Virgin Radio.
Yet, my journey was not without its profound challenges. I confronted two attempted suicides, an experience that marked a significant turning point in my life. These struggles highlighted the importance of mental health and the urgency of addressing it. It was during these challenging times that I realized something was missing—a missing message that I was meant to uncover.
My journey toward healing began when I discovered the concepts of peer support, trauma-informed care, and the recovery model. These newfound insights became my lifeline during my darkest moments. Through my personal journey of self-discovery and recovery, I finally found my message—the transformative power of merging media with the themes of mental, spiritual, and inner work health.
Collaborating with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) allowed me to contribute to program development for Recovery College, where I could share my experiences and model behavior for others on a similar path.
But, there was still a void, something I couldn't quite put my finger on. That absent puzzle piece would soon fall into place when I was introduced to Sean Dennie and cSPACE.
I vividly remember explaining my vision for a live talk show with experiential learning elements to Sean. His intrigue led to a life-changing offer—he allowed me to host The Oratory for one week. Filled with determination, I eagerly embraced this opportunity.
In the planning phase, I delved into extensive research and stumbled upon the word "Oratory." Its Latin root meaning, "the art of public speaking," perfectly encapsulated my vision. Excitingly, I received the news that I would not only host The Oratory for one week but for an entire month.
In April 2023, The Oratory embarked on its first episode—a successful pilot that marked the beginning of a transformative journey. Since then, I've been tirelessly prototyping and refining The Oratory, creating a space where hearts heal, stories intertwine, and souls find their home.
